How To Use the Layout Builder
A layout is a set of up to four layout sections: Header, Page Title Bar, Content and Footer. Each section is built in the Builder like a normal page. A layout then tells the site where to use those sections: everywhere, or only on the pages you choose.
You need the Layout Builder when a part of the site that surrounds your pages should be built with the Builder, or when one group of pages (for example all blog posts, the search results or the 404 page) should look different from the rest. By default only administrators see Tirenoa › Layouts and Tirenoa › Layout Sections.

Layouts and Layout Sections
| Section type | What it replaces |
|---|---|
| Header | The header of the site, including logo and menu |
| Page Title Bar | The bar with the page title below the header |
| Content | The area between page title bar and footer. Add the Content element to show the text of the page or post itself |
| Footer | The footer of the site |
The Tirenoa › Layouts screen shows one box per layout. The first box is the Global Layout. It has no conditions: sections you assign there appear on the whole site. Every other layout has its own name and conditions.
A layout does not have to fill all four areas. An area you leave empty in a layout uses the section of the Global Layout. If the Global Layout has no section for that area either, the standard header, page title bar, page content or footer from Tirenoa › Options is shown.
Create a Layout and Assign Sections
- Go to Tirenoa › Layouts.
- Type a name into Enter Layout Name and click Create New Layout. A new box appears next to the Global Layout.
- Click the area you want to change, for example Select Header.
- On the New Section tab enter a Section Name and click Create New Section, or switch to Existing Section and pick a section you built before.
- The area now shows the name of the section. Click the pen icon to open the section in the Builder and design it.
- To take a section out of a layout, click the unlink icon on the area. The section itself is not deleted.
Changes on this screen are saved at once. There is no save button for assigning sections or renaming a layout. To delete a layout, click the trash icon in its title bar and confirm with Delete Layout. The Global Layout cannot be deleted.
Set the Conditions of a Layout
Conditions decide on which pages a layout is used. A layout without conditions is never used.
- Click the cog icon in the title bar of the layout. The Layout Conditions window opens.
- Choose a group on the left: Pages, Posts, Archives, one group for each further content type of your site, and Other with Search Results and 404 Page.
- Click the check mark next to a condition to include it, or the cross to exclude it. Conditions such as Specific Pages or Children of Specific Pages open a list where you search for and tick single items.
- Check your choice under Manage Conditions, which lists everything under Include and Exclude, then close the window. Conditions are saved while you click.
- A layout needs at least one Include condition. A layout that only has excludes is never used.
- Exclude always wins inside one layout: include All Pages and exclude one specific page, and the layout is used on every page except that one.
- The same include condition can belong to one layout only. If it is already used elsewhere, the Builder tells you and offers Assign Here, which moves the condition to the current layout.
When Two Layouts Match the Same Page
Two layouts can match one page with different conditions, for example one with All Pages and one with a specific page. In that case the layout that comes later in the order of the Layouts screen is used.
Drag a layout by the move icon in its title bar to change the order, and place the more specific layout after the general one. The order is saved when you drop the box; the Save Layout Order button below the layouts saves it as well. The Global Layout stays first and is used whenever no other layout matches.
Manage Layout Sections
Tirenoa › Layout Sections lists all sections with their type. Here you can also create a section without assigning it yet: choose a Layout Section Type, enter a name and click Create New Layout Section. Each row offers Edit, Live Builder, Clone and Trash.
While you edit a section, the Layout Section tab of its options has View Dynamic Data As. Pick a page, post, archive, the search or the 404 page there to preview the section with real content.
Note: A section in the trash, or one that is not published, is skipped. The area then falls back to the Global Layout or to the standard output, so check your layouts after you delete a section.
