Important Update Information

An update replaces the files of the Tirenoa theme and its plugins with a newer version. Your pages, images, forms and Global Options are stored in the database and stay as they are.

This page explains how updates are delivered today and gives a short checklist for before and after. It applies to every Tirenoa update, large or small.

How Updates Are Delivered

Tirenoa is installed and maintained by Tiaro. At present, Tiaro installs new versions on client sites itself. You do not have to start anything.

Tirenoa also checks Tiaro’s update server for a newer version of the theme and of its plugins. When the server offers a version higher than the one installed, WordPress shows it like any other update, under Dashboard › Updates, and for the plugins also on Tirenoa › Plugins. As long as no higher version is published there, these screens show nothing for Tirenoa. That is normal.

Note: If Tiaro maintains your site, leave Tirenoa updates to Tiaro, even when an update is offered. If you are unsure who is responsible, ask before you click.

Before An Update

  • Make a full backup of the files and the database, and make sure you know how to restore it.
  • Never change files inside the Tirenoa theme or plugin folders. An update overwrites them. Custom CSS belongs in Tirenoa › Options.
  • Read the changelog for the new version.
  • Pick a quiet time. For larger updates you can show visitors a notice page while you work: Tirenoa › Maintenance Mode, set Mode to Maintenance. Administrators still see the site.
  • Ask editors to save their work and stay out of the admin area during the update.

The Right Order

  1. Update the Tirenoa theme.
  2. Update Tirenoa Core and Tirenoa Builder, so theme and plugins are on matching versions.
  3. Update the other plugins listed on Tirenoa › Plugins.
  4. Open Tirenoa › Maintenance and apply patches if the Patcher lists any for the new version.

Do not stop halfway. A new theme with old Tirenoa plugins, or the other way round, can cause display errors until all parts are updated.

After An Update

  1. Click Reset Caches in the admin bar. Compiled CSS and JavaScript are rebuilt on the next page views, so the first visits are a little slower.
  2. Open Tirenoa › System Status. Current Version under Tirenoa Version History shows the new version, and Previous Versions the ones before it.
  3. Reload the site in your browser with a hard refresh, or look at it in a private window, so you do not see old files from the browser cache.
  4. Check the home page, one inner page, the menu on a phone, and send a test message through a form.
  5. Set Mode back to Off if you switched Maintenance Mode on.

If Something Looks Wrong

  • Reset the caches once more and reload the page. Most display problems right after an update come from old cached files.
  • If your host or a caching plugin keeps its own page cache, clear that as well.
  • Check on Tirenoa › Plugins that Tirenoa Core and Tirenoa Builder are active and up to date.
  • If the problem remains, send Tiaro a system report from Tirenoa › System Status (Get System Report, then Copy For Support) and say what you updated and when. Restore the backup if the site is not usable.
